| PLAYER↴ Name: Soap Contact: Other Characters: N/A CHARACTER↴ Character Name: Five / Das / Emily Kolburn Age: 16 Species: Human Canon: Dark Matter Canon Point: 3x01, during the chaos that ensues after the EOS-7 space station attack and before Truffault gets her to an escape pod. Character Info: Behold: a wiki link! Personality: Five is clearly more idealistic than the rest of the crew of the Raza, as she is usually the one to insist that they can change and be better people than they were before losing their memories. She also wants to believe that they can change the universe for the better. She has good intentions and is kind-hearted, though she also doesn't seem to have much problem with breaking the law when it's necessary, or even just for them to get more money. Above all, though, she really wants to be helpful and to be seen as useful and a part of the team, and it bugs her any time it's implied that she's just a little girl, or that she's "softer" than the rest of her crew. (Or that they're soft for keeping her around.) She wants her voice heard, and her opinion should matter, and she has things to offer that make her valuable to have around. She makes decisions based mostly on emotion and instincts, and fortunately her instincts tend to be pretty good. She disobeys orders on a regular basis, but only in order to protect the people she cares about or help them in some way. This is definitely one of those traits that carried over from Das, considering she was the one to wipe the crew's memories in order to protect one of them. Das also had no problems committing crimes in order to survive, a view clearly still shared by Five although her sense of ethics are still against physically harming innocent people if they can help it. A lot of helpful things Five ends up doing for her crew are things never even asked of her, but that she does on instinct or she improvises. Five is the first and most often one to call her and her crew "family." While this opinion was probably not shared by Das considering the crew of the Raza's old personalities, she clearly thought very affectionately of her fellow orphans and runaways aboard the space station they illegally inhabited prior to their deaths and Das stowing away aboard the Raza, given evidence that she had a picture of them together and was intending to buy them all dinner to have together with the money she'd gotten off a mark. This suggests that even here, at the Carnival, though she'll be missing her Raza crew, she may still find friends to call family. It should be noted though that her Raza crew, even if they aren't here with her, they are in effect still a part of her, due to the fact that she retains their memories from before they all went into stasis. She can't access these on purpose, not without some sort of device to help, but they occasionally pop up in her dreams, and more rarely things will bubble up to the surface while she's completely conscious. Five can be friendly and social, but has times when she needs a quiet place to herself, and on the Raza she finds this in the ducts of the air-vents. She also uses them to explore the ship, and in the beginning also to sneak into the other crew member's rooms and snoop around a little, though only after she made an effort to get to know them one-on-one and was initially rejected. Despite finding herself in dark situations, and even having to kill at one point in defense of one of her crew mates, Five still shows at times incredible cheer and playfulness. Bouncing back from dark times seems relatively easy for her, the exception we're shown to be in the case of death or betrayal of/by someone she cares about. During those dark moments, she often shows fear but has stated that she's "tired of being the frightened little girl," and she always steps up despite her fear and does what she has to for herself and for her family. For this reason, it's implied she may be considered the bravest of the Raza crew. Unlike some of the other members of her crew, Five shows affection pretty easily, and has displayed this not only with hugs but even kisses on the cheek for some. She does know the boundaries on this though, and with people like Three who aren't as good at handling that kind of affection, she shows it in other ways. Specifically with him, they tease each other and play pranks on one another. This and other clues also suggest that she's good at reading people and their emotions, for instance she's the first to really make note of the fact that Android has emotions, and even has to point it out to Android herself. While she doesn't trust as easily as probably a sixteen-year-old who hadn't had to survive on the streets would, she does seem to trust more easily than most of the rest of the Raza crew. This could have to do with her idealistic nature, and wanting to believe people can be better. She does know how bad they can be though, and one important scene that stands out to me as a moment where her defining traits show through (both good and bad), is when she has to fight the old (evil) Portia Lin within their shared neural link to the ship in order to bring back the "Two" (Portia post-memory-wipe) personality. Five starts off doing that, rather viciously attacking Portia with a pipe in a memory "where Portia was at her weakest." Five is angry, and this is when she mentions that she's "tired of playing the frightened little girl," and asks how Portia likes it for a change. She's about to deal a finishing blow but hesitates because Portia is vulnerable and terrified. Android tells Five she has to finish her off, "you have to show no mercy." She realizes that Portia is the way she is (with her past memories intact) because she was only shown the worst that humanity had to offer, she wasn't treated fairly or shown mercy before her memory wipe. "They made you this way," Five says. "But I've seen the other side of you, and I want her back." Five drops the pipe and begs for her friend back, and Portia willingly obliges. Despite her idealism, she's not naive, and she knows how to survive on her own. She is frequently underestimated, in the beginning not just by their enemies but also by her own crew. By this canon point she's definitely proven herself, and because of this has more confidence (not to mention more abilities that she's been taught - such as her fighting skills) then she did in the beginning. Without her family to back her up, she will be a little more fearful and insecure again until she finds people she can become close to who will encourage and support her. People who she can make proud. It's worth noting that in the alternate timeline where Portia (Two), Marcus (Three), and Ryo (Four) are all still evil, and where Portia killed Griffin (Six), that Five is not there. However, they have possession of the blink drive which is something that Five stole before she even stowed away on the ship. To me this suggests that in that alternate timeline, they spaced Five and took her possessions. In a timeline where Five doesn't exist, these three are selfish and violent with little to no remorse. And yes, some of this may have to do with their memories, like Five seems to think is all that separates the two versions of her friends (despite that fact that Five herself has these memories of theirs stored inside her somewhere, only able to access them when she's asleep or using a device that puts her in danger). But I believe a lot of it has to do with the fact that with Five, the crew of the Raza have someone they all want to protect and be good for, because she encourages the good in them. She's not only their guiding light trying to keep them being good, but she also provides them with laughter and genuine, honest affection, she helps keep them a family, helps them remember to fight for one another. Five is the bright spot in dark times. Abilities: It should be noted that none of these are superhuman levels of capabilities/powers. She's an ordinary human. ★ Extremely bright CARNIVAL↴ Soul Colour: Synergy #51C0B6 Ideal Jobs: Mercenary, Repairman, and/or Thief Relevant Experience: Five is technically a mercenary in her own canon, as she works with a group of them and helps them and gets some of the reward for whatever jobs they do. However, since her motive is primarily to make her crew mates proud of her and she does have ethics in regards to needlessly harming other people (meaning: not in self-defense, protection, or revenge - because vengeance is totally an acceptable reason), it would be understandable that the Ringmaster might be unwilling to make her a mercenary, even if she has the experience and skills, because Five might not be agreeable to every possible mission. (Setting her up with a partner or team for this kind of thing would more likely guarantee that she'd agree to do it.) Stealing things is perfectly acceptable to her, and she's skilled at picking pockets and running small cons (small as in like: which cup is the nut under now?). She's good at breaking in and sneaking in to places, thanks to hacking and electronic expertise as well as fitting into tight spaces comfortably (see: air vents and crawlspaces). She has a tendency to fiddle with electronic objects and try to fix broken ones whether asked to or not, so it's possible that even given another job, she might pick up stray devices she finds to mess with as a hobby. It's relaxing to her. Reason for Joining: Escaping the Prince (4th Wall Ball event) SAMPLES↴ ★ At the 4th Wall Ball, though she is a little foggy-minded and thus less curious/nosy than normal. (10+) ★ At an AU Shipping Meme with teen Anakin. (Also 10+) Prose Writing Sample: It's easy for Five to lose track of time and place when she's working with her tools, putting something broken back together and making it work again. Her mind focuses in on the wires, the circuits, fuses... And the din of the surrounding carnival, the pulsing lights, the music, the animal smells - all of it fades away. It's helpful, because she can pretend she's back in the mess hall of the Raza, her parts and tools all laid out on the stainless steel table that changes colors with the light reflecting from the viewscreen on the wall, showcasing maybe the aquarium, or a wheat field, or a babbling brook. Something serene like that. She can pretend that One and Three are arguing in the background, despite the fact that One's been gone for too long now. Gone for good. She can pretend that Four's stopping in for a refill of water in the middle of his training - with bo staffs, swords, whatever regimen he's on for that hour of the day. She can pretend Six and Two are sitting on the other side of the table, playing cards, poker, teasing her about something or other, and how much she completely doesn't mind because they're there, and they're her family. |
